Research and development facilities in Hessen

The numerous research and development facilities in Hessen are a motivating force both in science and business. The spectrum of research includes medical research along with natural sciences and engineering, as well as the humanities.

Renowned institutes, such as the Fraunhofer Institute, the Helmholtz Centre and the five Max Planck Institutes, firmly anchor Hessen in the German research landscape:

  • Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability (LBF) Darmstadt
  • Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research (IGD) Darmstadt
  • Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology (SIT) Darmstadt
  • GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research Darmstadt
  • Max Planck Institute for Biophysics Frankfurt am Main
  • Max Planck Institute for European Legal History Frankfurt am Main
  • Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research Bad Nauheim
  • Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology Marburg
  • Max Planck Institute for Brain Research Frankfurt am Main

In addition, Hessen universities have established clusters of excellence to promote cutting edge research on various subjects including the cardiopulmonary system, macromolecular complexes, the formation of normative orders and smart interfaces: understanding and designing fluid boundaries. The quality of research is also evidenced by additional special research areas, research groups and the graduate schools supported by the DFG, the German Research Foundation.
